Overview

Currently in our 8th year, Asia Golf Design staff have been based and working throughout Asia for the past 31 years in various roles in the construction and design business.

Beginning in Thailand in 1992 as a Construction Supervisor for a 54-hole project west of Bangkok, we then migrated south to Singapore where the new role was Design Coordinator for all IMG and its signature designer projects. Over the next 21 years, over 90+ projects were commissioned in numerous countries and with various signature designers, including some under the IMG Design banner.

Over the years, Project Manager was added to the overall duties, as well as a promotion to Senior Design Associate. During the peak years of the mid 2000’s, it was not uncommon to have 12-15 projects underway at any one particular time. In order to ensure quality control for all projects, travel was virtually non-stop for a number of years.

With the recently formed design and consulting company, we will be limiting ourselves to no more than 2-3 projects at any one time. This will ensure hands on supervision to all projects, a quick response time should issues arise, and being able to meet all design obligations on time. As the company will remain based in Asia, we will be in the same time zone of all our projects and be able to provide immediate responses to design and construction issues.

We look forward to meeting and working with many new Clients in the coming years, and hopefully renewing friendships with past Clients.

DESIGN VISION

Create a golfing experience that is enjoyable, yet challenging, for golfers of all levels (beginners to professionals) that is constructed cost effectively and in harmony with the existing terrain. Golf courses should look and feel like they have been there for many years, using the existing features (trees, rocks, streams, etc.) as part of the design.

  • AGD staff have been involved with 28 golf courses that have been ranked in various international golf magazines.
  • AGD staff have worked on 17 golf courses internationally that have hosted either professional tour events or national amateur championships

STEVE SHEPHERDSON

As Senior Design Associate/Project Manager, I was responsible for ensuring that the integrity and specifications for each design assignment were fully implemented in the field. I was based full-time at IMG’s regional design headquarters in Singapore. I was able to deliver a quick-response, cost-effective alternative to otherwise costly full-time, on-site construction supervision, saving developers and golf course owners considerable amounts of money. I was fortunate to work closely with IMG’s Director of Design, Brit Stenson, who is based in IMG’s design studio in the Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

I have been active in the golf course construction and design industry for 27 years now. I started with IMG in 1994 after working in hands-on positions such as Construction Supervisor, Design Coordinator, equipment operator and golf course superintendent with highly-respected golf course design companies such as Jack Nicklaus Golf Services and McCumber Golf. During these pre-IMG tenures, I was able to have worked in diverse markets such as Thailand, Florida, Ohio, Georgia, Alberta and initially, Ontario (Canada).

Academically, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Lake City Community College (Florida), with an Associate of Science Degree in Golf Course Operations in 1990. Since 1988 I have been a member of the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America (GCSAA).

Since joining IMG in 1994, I had been involved with all of IMG’s pan-Asian design efforts of 104 projects in 17 countries, some of which include:
